Juarez

juarez.jpgJuarez Mexico is a city of 3 million located across the border from El Paso, TX. After the Mexico City earthquake, a group of brothers on their way to aide in the reconstruction, traveled through Juarez and saw a great need. In 1986, World Relief sent three couples to Juarez to investigate ways ACWR could help.

Since Juarez is located on the border, thousands emigrate annually hoping to find jobs or get into the USA. Upon arrival, they find no jobs and settle in large ghettos or colonies on the outskirts of Juarez. These people live in cardboard shacks and forage for food in the city dump.

The three couples sent to Juarez met with a local pastor, Chito Aguilar. Chito has a heart for the poor people and had started a feeding program for children in the ghetto. Since 1986, WR has sent hundreds of work teams to Juarez to build houses. ACWR currently has four ministries operating in Juarez. The construction teams build simple houses, the feeding program supplies hot meals for children, medical & dental teams provide care for hundreds of needy, and the school at the Granjas church.
