Project Areas: USA: History

In the late 1980’s, World Relief became active in supporting work projects within the United States to give opportunity to those who were not able to go with the work teams outside the continental United States. The first major work project, occurring in 1989-90, was located in Awendaw, South Carolina, to help the victims of Hurricane Hugo rebuild and repair their houses. We were able to provide funds and volunteers to help the hurricane victims, making it a successful and blessed project.

During the 90’s, our disaster work project activities were with Christian Aid Ministries. The largest joint project was at Homestead, FL following Hurricane Andrew in 1992-93.  In the late 1990’s it became unnecessary to provide volunteer opportunities through CAM, as they supplied a sufficient number of volunteers.

The World Relief Board supported the USA Committee’s assessment of the work project situation. Approval to establish the “Disaster Response Sub-Committee”, and funds to acquire and equip the necessary tool trailers, were given.

The Disaster Response Subcommittee directed repair and rebuilding projects following tornados in 2000 and 2001, and following hurricanes in 2005 through 2006. During 2006, the USA Committee was reorganized to include the activities with non-profit organizations, as in the past, and the activities of the Disaster Response Sub-Committee. The Committee has employed an administrator to direct the work project activity.
